Intro to Long Stitch

About the Workshop:

This one-day, 3-hour workshop covers long stitch binding, a non-adhesive sewn structure for multi-section books. 
Long stitch is a versatile technique that adapts easily across materials and book projects. Participants will learn measurements, signature and cover preparation, and the long stitch sewing procedure. Artists' books using long stitch variations will be shown throughout the session. Students leave with a finished long-stitch bound book.


Required Materials:

  • Pencil and paper for taking notes

  • If you already own the following please bring them. If not, CBA will have some for purchase or to borrow.

    • bonefolder, awl, snap-off blade, right-angle ruler, bookbinder’s needle, and pencil.

All other materials will be provided by the Center for Book Arts at no additional cost.


About the Instructor:

Efrat Hakimi (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Brooklyn. Working across technologies and crafts, she studies and interprets images, objects, and sites to explore the relationships between bodies and cultural artifacts, particularly those that bear witness to the female body. Hakimi’s practice is grounded in contemporary feminist thinking, Arab-Jewish narratives, and their intersection with art and media. Recent exhibitions include Secrist Beach Gallery, Chicago; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; the Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the Tel Aviv Museum of Art; and Roots and Culture, Chicago. Hakimi received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2019) and her BSc from Ben-Gurion University, Be’er Sheva (2010). Her awards include the Mandel Cultural Leadership Program (2026-28), the New Jewish Culture Fellowship (2023), the Presser Photography Award from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2020), and the Katz International Photography Award (2018).
