About the Workshop:

Take your bookbinding skills to the next level with hardcover construction.
Building on the fundamentals of Bookbinding I, this intermediate course introduces multi-signature sewing, and case-binding techniques used in fine and edition binding. Students will design and produce a fully cased-in hardcover book, learning the precision and sequencing that give hardbound books their strength and elegance.
As you develop your craftsmanship, you’ll also examine how material and structure influence an artists’ book’s visual and conceptual presence. Ideal for those ready to deepen both technical fluency and creative expression within the book arts.
This in-person class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Hadley Vogel.
*Prerequisites: Bookbinding 1 or equivalent

Optional Materials:

  • Pencil and paper for note-taking

  • Bookbinding awl

  • Bone folder

  • Olfa silver knife and blades

All other materials will be provided by the Center for Book Arts at no additional cost.

About the Instructor

Hadley Vogel (b. 1987) is a second generation bookbinder who apprenticed from an early age under her father Paul Vogel of the Vogel Bindery in East Hampton, NY. In addition to her apprenticeship on Long Island, Hadley worked under master binder Martín Farfán Patiño, of Farfán Encuadernadores, Mexico City, MX, where she honed her skills, focusing on restorations of historic volumes from Mexican museum and institutional collections. Since the opening of Hadley Hill Bindery, she has focused on the development of experimental forms, including plush bindings and the use of recycled fur, melding contemporary aesthetics with traditional construction processes.
