About the Workshop:

Discover the vibrant world of Risograph printing.

Meet the Risograph: part photocopier, part screen printer, wholly unique. This machine-based printmaking process combines the speed of digital duplication with the warmth and character of analog printing, creating work that feels both contemporary and handmade.

Through direct interaction with the Risograph, you'll learn how this Japanese duplicator became a beloved tool in artist studios, zine communities, and independent publishers worldwide. Working in collaborative teams, you'll master basic operations while exploring how technical choices shape aesthetic outcomes. By the end of the workshop, you'll take home a two-color poster edition you helped design and print.

No prior printing experience required. All materials provided.

Required Materials:

  • Pencil and paper for taking notes
  • Clothes that can get stained or dirty (CBA will provide aprons, but the ink used on press can stain)

All other materials will be provided by the Center for Book Arts at no additional cost.

About the Instructor:

Nichole Shinn is an interdisciplinary artist and game developer who researches and dissects subcultural fantasies to reflect and build out their own elaborate fictional narratives. Their work explores themes of climate disaster, projected gender essentialism in media, feminine stereotyping in fantasy and utopic dreaming of love in a (un)dying world. They are a co-founder of TXTbooks, an independent publisher of risograph zines. Their publications are held in collections at the Whitney Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art and SFMoma among others. In 2026 they founded Ultraviolet Softworks, an indie game studio, focused on publishing alternative and experimental games, virtual art, books and related ephemera.
