About the Workshop:

This in-person class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Zoe Katz.

Endbands are the small decorative bands sewn onto the head and tail of a book's spine, and they carry more history than their size suggests. For centuries they did real structural work, reinforcing the spine at its weakest points and anchoring the text block against the wear of daily use. Binding traditions from Coptic Egypt to the Islamic world developed endband patterns so distinctive that conservators can sometimes guess a book's origin from the endband alone. Today, a well-sewn endband remains one of the details that sets a hand-bound book apart.

In this workshop, students will learn to sew two types of hand-sewn endbands, as well as two ways to create custom false endbands that can be applied with minimal effort as an alternative to store-bought rolls. Students will also learn to make their own cores, the foundations used in many types of endbands, and we will discuss the possibilities that different core materials open up in endband making and design.

This class is ideal for bookbinders looking to refine a finishing detail, and for artists interested in adding color, texture, and a touch of tradition to their bindings.

  • olfa knife

  • awl

  • Optional: (a text block that is sewn and not yet cased in or have spine lining)
