About the Workshop:

On night one there will be a review of how to set type and lock up a form on the Vandercook. Students will each set one line of a piece of writing, choosing a typeface that they feel is appropriate, proof it and print it as a group. The group will decide which typeface is best for this writing and everyone will set in that face.

On the second night students will set a 4 line stanza in the typeface the class has chosen, Each person will proof their type and make whatever changes are necessary.

In the third session, students will spend some time type designing a broadside that supports, rather than illustrates, their stanza, keeping in mind that each person's work will be part of the larger set. We will include foam to add color, shape and pattern to the broadsides. Students can try out the foam and various colors of ink.

The fourth session will see students learning about the order of operations and doing their first print run, which will be an edition.

The last class will have students printing their last run and assembling the set. Throughout, we will fine tune our printing, so that it is well inked and crisp, understanding how to utilize impression as a design element.

Required Materials:

  • Pencil and paper for taking notes
  • Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get stained or dirty
