Founded in 1986 by artists Jan Voss, Henriëtte van Egten, and Rúna Thorkelsdóttir, Boekie Woekie is an Amsterdam-based bookstore, publishing house, and exhibition space dedicated to artists’ books. Over nearly four decades, it has become an important international hub for the production, distribution, and discussion of independent artist-led publishing.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition In The Wake of Blind Navigation. Boekie Woekie – Books by Artists at Center for Book Arts, New York (September 30–December 13, 2025), this volume is the first to present a complete history of Boekie Woekie’s activities and influence. It includes newly commissioned essays, archival documents, photographs, and an illustrated checklist of key works, offering insight into its unique combination of artistic experimentation, radical distribution methods, and long-term independence. Contributors include Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes, Maike Aden, Anne Thurmann-Jajes, Barbara Moore, and Roger Willems.
