About the Workshop:
Japanese Woodblock Printing introduces participants to traditional Japanese woodcut techniques. Printmaker Sato Yamamoto will talk about traditional Japanese pattern making and then guide you through the steps of designing, carving, and printing a woodblock by hand using a baren, horse hair brush and watercolor over the course of the workshop. This class provides techniques on relief printing and hands-on woodblock printing for beginners. Participants will have the option of carving and printing a block from their own project (illustration, portrait, pattern, book image) or working free style.
Popularized in the 1800’s in Japan, this style of woodblock printing made art more accessible. Some of the most iconic prints known were made using this style including The Great Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa, an 1831 woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
Both experienced and beginning relief printmakers are welcome!
