About the Workshop:
Intro to InDesign for Artists' Books & Publications covers introductory book layout in Adobe InDesign, preparation for prepress, and an overview of sourcing materials from papers to book cloth. In this workshop, students will be introduced to best practices for file setup using InDesign to create a publication. Design topics include title/cover, interior title, contents, colophon, back cover, and alternative book structures informed by the ethos of independent publishing. In this multipart workshop, students will first learn a brief history of artists' books and binding styles, prepare and design small-scale digital publications in InDesign, discover file output settings for print using digital or analog approaches, and learn about paper weights, colors, textures, book cloths, and finishing techniques to consider during digital layout.
This course is designed for anyone seeking to develop skills in book layout and will cover introductory use of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop for publication design. All book ideas and backgrounds are welcome!
Required Materials:
- Students must have access to Photoshop and InDesign in the Adobe Creative Suite to successfully participate in this course.
- We recommended access to paper to create book dummies on hand.
About Lindsay Buchman
Lindsay Buchman is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist, writer, and publisher whose work explores image-making and writing through print media, lens-based media, and artist books. Buchman holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from California State University Long Beach. Exhibitions of her work include the Penumbra Foundation; San Francisco Center for the Book; TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image; LA Art Book Fair at The Geffen Contemporary, MOCA; New York Art Book Fair, MoMA PS1; Tokyo Art Book Fair, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; SPRINT Milano, Spazio Maiocchi. Her artist books are included in collections at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, SFMOMA, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and Harvard University. As an extension of her practice, she runs Seaton Street Press, an independent artists’ books and publications project that examines the intersections of site, language, and memory through archival histories, counternarratives, social identities, and geographies.
