Letterpress Collage (Summer 2023)

This two-day, in-person workshop takes place at CBA on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7, from 10:00 am—4:00 pm.

  • Saturday, May 6, 10:00am—4:00pm
  • Sunday, May 7, 10:00am—4:00pm

Please Note: Registration for this workshop closes on April 30, at 11:59 pm.

About the Workshop:

Join instructor Roni Gross for this opportunity to use letterpress as collage material and play on the letterpress in an experimental way!

In this two day in-person workshop, participants will print with wood type on the first day, making source material that they will share on the second day. Participants will learn how to lock up their wood forms and print with multiple colors and formats. On the second day, they will draw from the pool of prints, abstracting the originals through a series of exercises and collage techniques to generate new relationships.

Participants will enjoy exploring the large collection of wood type at CBA and printing with it as both abstract pattern and readable language. They will experience the qualities of letterpress ink, in terms of overlapping colors and increasing transparency. Sharing their prints as a pool of source material, they will work with the printed work through a variety of exercises which will transform the original work and create unforeseen connections.

Required Materials::

  • All materials will be provided
  • On the second collage day, participants are welcome to bring anything that can be glued to a base sheet.

All other materials will be provided by Center for Book Arts at no additional cost.
