About the Workshop:
This in-person course is taught by CBA instructor Chang Yuchen.
On the first day, students will learn how to fold a section of accordion book, how to attach multiple sections together and a few different styles of cover-making. Through hands-on exercises, participants will be led to consider the relationship between part and whole, front and back. Examples of artists’ books using related techniques will be shown to demonstrate the poetic potentials of this wavy structure.
On the second day, students will learn two variations of accordion book: pocket accordion with hard cover and flag book. In these two projects, participants will learn to work with bookcloth, brush and glue, as well as how to set up a workstation for a complicated project. Examples of artists’ books using related techniques will be shown to demonstrate the various usage of these skills.
This is a great opportunity for those interested in accordion structures for their books!
Required Materials:
- A bone folder (or a butter knife)

Additional materials will be provided to students by CBA for the course at no additional cost.
About the Instructor:
Chang Yuchen works in an interdisciplinary manner - writing as weaving, drawing as translation, teaching as hospitality, commerce as social experiment (see Use Value) and publishing as a dandelion spreading its seeds. By constantly entering and exiting each medium, she strolls against the category of things, the labor division among people.
Yuchen was a recipient of Kahn Mason SIP Fellowship, Poetry Project Curatorial Fellowship, Huayu Youth Award Grand Jury Prize, Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation Grant and Lumiarts Fellowship. She has shown/performed her work at UCCA, Para Site, Taikwun Contemporary, Abrons Art Center, Artists Space, Assembly Room, etc. She was an artist in residence at NARS x Governors Island Satellite Residency, MASS MoCA, Museum of Art and Design, Textile Art Center, among others. Yuchen has written for publications including Randian, Heichi Magazine, Press and Fold, Art in Print and more.
