In-Person Bookbinding Certificate Program Application
The Virtual Bookbinding Fundamentals Certificate Program is a comprehensive 64-hour course of study designed for artists and makers seeking to build a foundation in book arts techniques while developing a studio practice. Over the course of one year, participants will master essential bookbinding skills through structured core requirements while customizing their learning path to align with their unique artistic vision.
This certificate is designed for artists, designers, writers, and makers who are committed to developing serious technical skills in the book arts. The program provides both the structured skill-building and flexibility needed to support your individual goals. Participants should expect to dedicate regular studio time to practice and project development between workshops.
The curriculum balances technical skill with creative exploration through two complementary components:

Throughout the program, participants meet monthly with artist and instructor Ben Denzer for guided project development sessions. These critiques provide structured feedback on work-in-progress, help contextualize your technical learning within contemporary book arts discourse, and support the development of a cohesive body of work. The group format builds community with fellow certificate participants.
Successful completion requires attendance at all 64 hours of workshops (30 core + 24 elective) and participation in 10 hours of project development sessions. Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion from Center for Book Arts, demonstrating training in contemporary book arts techniques.
Operating on a cohort model, this program brings together a group of practitioners who will move through the curriculum together over the course of the year. This structure facilitates meaningful professional relationships that extend beyond the program itself.
As you progress through your core requirements and electives, you'll work alongside the same group of artists in workshops and monthly project development sessions. This repeated engagement allows for substantive dialogue about artistic practice, technical problem-solving, and conceptual development.
The monthly critique sessions with Ben Denzer serve as an anchor, providing a consistent forum to share works-in-progress and receive constructive feedback. The program's structure is designed to foster these lasting professional relationships while supporting your immediate artistic development.
