Then students will use their two stencils and two colors of their own choosing to create a series of designs across two books. By creating constraints of form and color, Mauriello challenges her students to do as much as possible with as little as possible.

Ultimately, students will bind their editions of two books into double-sided accordion-fold books with handmade paper wrappers, which can also be decorated with stenciled designs. Mauriello's favorite brand is Holbein Artists Gouache. The Lascaux acrylic-based brand of gouache paints is a less expensive option than the water-color variety.

Stiff flat-bottomed stencil brushes (sometimes called decorator brushes). Mauriello recommends the Robert Simmons as a reasonably-priced brand – in particular, the #1 and #11 brushes. She also uses the Da Vinci #6 brush for small areas. In general, more brushes mean less clean-up during painting sessions.
