About the Workshop:
This in-person class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Maria Veronica San Martín. In this workshop for kids (aged 8-13) and parents, students will explore the concept and making of a double accordion book or Dos-i-Do structure inspired by materials, methods and perspectives that will be presented by the instructor.
The course will focus on how to construct a simple but 3-D book with basic materials, by using printmaking and bookbinding techniques. The instructor will demonstrate how to construct an accordion book from pieces of paper, and will teaching how to use rubbing and stencil techniques for printing the content of the book. Students may also use other art forms, such as drawing, painting, or collage.
By the end of this course, students will reflect on what they created, and will continue their content of the book on their own!
There are a total of 6 spots open in this small-group workshop. Please be advised that registration fees cover both child and parent participation.
Required Materials:
- Blank and/or colored paper (printer paper, construction paper)
- Glue
- Surface for cutting
- Scissors or exacto knife
- Crayons, paint or ink
- Wax paper
- Any small toy or house found object with a texture
About Maria Veronica San Martin
Maria Veronica San Martin is a multidisciplinary Latin-American/New York artist and educator who explores the impacts of history, memory, and trauma through archives, artist books, sculpture and performance.
She has been a studio artist at the Whitney Museum, ISP (NYC), a scholar at the Center for Book Arts (NYC), and participated in the Art OMI Residency (Ghent, NY), Interlude (Hudson) and ACE (Argentina). She has been awarded two NYFA grants and three Chilean National grants.
San Martín has taught at the Center for Book Arts (NYC), Penland School of Craft (NC), Universidad de Chile, and Universidad Catolica de Chile and has conducted workshops for Vera List Center, The New School, Weeksville Heritage Center, The Pride Center and Public School. This summer she will be a Visiting Professor at Miami University (OH) and will teach workshops at The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. She is a member of the Board of Directors for Booklyn Art, as well as participating as an artist and contributing to their education program.
San Martin has exhibited nationally and internationally, participating in two biennials, performing at Lincoln Center and exhibited a public art at Rockefeller Center. Her “Moving Memorials” series of artist books is held in more than 60 collections highlighting the MET (NYC), the Walker Art Center (MN), the Library of Congress (DC), The Pompidou (FR), The Museum of Memory and Human Rights, and The Contemporary Art Center (Chile).
She is currently exhibiting “The Aesthetics of Information” No Olvidaremos, at the Austin Arts Center at Trinity College, CT and “Geology of Memory” at The Print Center in Philadelphia while preparing 2 more solo shows in NYC and Canada and other group international exhibitions.
